After a heavy last blog, this one is going to focus on the small changes we can make and how to make it easy and enjoyable for us!

We have a bunch of suggestions on how to shop sustainably and our tips to go alongside them. So, let’s dive in with our first how to;

How to thrift:

1) Be patient and commit! - You aren’t always going to be successful and find the hidden gems in the charity shops. Let’s be ok with being unsuccessful!

2) See thrifting as a fun activity with a friend or take yourself on a date to avoid disappointment.

3) Go with inspiration in mind - Have a stalk on Pinterest or have an idea of what you’re looking for. We often find we are more successful when we have things in mind for when we're looking!

4) Try a new town or area of a city! - It’s a great way to explore a new area p.s. Wealthy areas are the best for a guaranteed find.

5) Have an open mind when you shop! Be open to sizing’s and styles. Often sizing’s can be off so don’t exclusively look at your size. Also have in mind that you can alter/repair/upcycle.

Don’t forget your reusable bag!

We know thrifting isn’t for everyone so we also have tips on other ways to shop sustainably:

How to online shop:

If you weren’t successful thrifting or have been looking at other brands, depop and vinted are a great place to find exactly what you want! You can often find the exact thing from places like Nike or Zara for example, but cheaper on vinted and depop! Kinder to your wallet and the environment, a win win!

How to Rent clothes:

There are apps that you can rent clothes for however long you want. Usually, they have a cost per day and is perfect for occasion wear. ByRotation is a luxury rental app that gives you the chance to afford designer brands for a one-off wedding or party. Positively encouraging the circular economy.

How to check other brands:

Good on you is an app that rates brands based on their sustainability, looking at the three pillars that we talked about in our previous blog. If you didn’t catch it, it’s called ‘Why to ditch Fast Fashion’. If you find out your favourite brand isn’t sustainable, they’ll recommend brands that are similar but better to the environment and people! It’s a great way to find new brands and support other businesses! It also educates you on how our high street brands are really greenwashing us…we will do a whole blog on this!

How to shop small businesses:

There are many benefits to supporting small businesses. They are more likely to be sustainable and ethical in their practices and you’re helping someone achieve their dream!

But we know small businesses can be expensive, so a little tip from Grace is to create a folder on Instagram called ‘wardrobe wants’, then save items you love from small businesses and see them as future investment pieces. Then start saving your pennies!

7 day rule! – We recommend waiting 7 days to buy something and if you still love it, you know it’s still a worthy purchase. So often we come home from shopping trips and don’t love the piece of clothing as much or don’t wear it that often, this rule helps you only buy things you really love!

But most of all consume less.
